Over the Counter Acne Treatment and What you can Expect

Is an Over the Counter Acne Treatment Worth your Money?

Over the counter acne treatment products are typically going to work for minor acne, but they are not very quick. There are some positives associated with these products, but there are also many negatives. This is usually the first place we turn when we start to get acne or we have a breakout because it is the most convenient solution and probably the least expensive as well.

This can be dangerous, however, because we all know you really do get what you pay for with many products. Over the counter acne treatment products are no different and you really will get what you pay for with the different choices. They are all very similar and there really is not one that is leaps and bounds above the other for getting rid of your acne.

Most of the OTC acne treatments will contain the same basic ingredients and they will do basically the same thing for you. This is fine if you just have a minor breakout or a pimple pop up every once in a while, but if you are suffering from chronic acne that is painful, could scar, and is embarrassing, then you may need something better than an over the counter acne treatment.

The Main Ingredients in an Over the Counter Acne Treatment

Nearly every OTC acne treatment will contain Benzoyl Peroxide. This is the most effective ingredient and is responsible for killing the bacteria that is causing your acne. Typically the range will be from about 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide up to about 10% depending on the product. It really is not necessary to go over 5% with over the counter product when it comes to this ingredient.

The good thing is Benzoyl Peroxide typically does not cause side effects like many of the prescription drugs might. It may dry out your skin a bit, but that is about it and you can use it for months without having to worry about some of the more serious side effects associated with products like Accutane.

Salicylic acid is another very common ingredient found in over the counter acne treatments. This is a beta hydroxy acid and it will work as an astringent to remove your dead skin cells. This helps to eliminate clogged pores and allows your skin to renew faster. It is used more to prevent future acne than to cure current acne.

You may also see Sulfur on the list of ingredients found in the OTC acne products. This is an older treatment and it is the most common reason these types of acne treatments cause your skin to dry out and peel. It will dry out the acne and stop the bacteria from growing, but it can cause you pain and irritation in the process.

All of these ingredients and many of the other common acne treating ingredients are chemicals. This means there is always a chance of your skin reacting and becoming very irritated. Many of these products will help you to get your acne under control, but they will not get rid of it for good. An actual cure is usually found outside of the drug stores from your doctor or in a few other forms.

Over the Counter Acne Treatment Compared to Natural Remedies

It is hard to understand why we produce as many chemically enhanced products for the treatment of acne as we do when there are many natural remedies that work as well if not better. Putting chemicals on your face can actually cause scarring from your acne and can cause many other side effects that might not be as major as Accutane and other prescribed treatments, but they are still harsh and painful.

Instead of counting on the chemicals listed above you can choose witch hazel, honey, Aloe Vera, tea tree oil, and other herbal remedies found naturally in our world. These are much less harsh and will do the same thing for you. Many have reported better results with the right natural formula compared to a typically over the counter acne treatment.
